With a view to enhancing the understanding of Shanghai – host city of the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) by the CIIE participants, and facilitating them to actively seize the development opportunities in the various districts of the city to invest and prosper, as an important part of the series of “Business Opportunities in Shanghai for first CIIE Participants”, Invest Shanghai, together with the 16 districts of the city, will successively launch CIIE investment guides of each district, covering district profiles, key industries, investment opportunities and so on.

Songjiang is known as Huating in ancient times and it was established as the County Town of Huating in 751 AD, which is a famous and affluent area in the south of the Yangtze River. Songjiang District covers an area of 604.67 km2, which lies in the upper reaches of Huangpu River and the center of Yangtze Delta. It is 30km away from the Shanghai city, 25km from Hongqiao International Airport, 68km from Pudong International Airport and it is an important gateway to Shanghai in the southwest. There is an integrated transportation network made up of several major expressways and rails such as G60 Hu-Kun Expressway, G50 Hu-Yu Expressway, G15 Shen-Hai Expressway, G1501 Shanghai Ring Expressway, S32 Shen-Jia-Hu Expressway, No.9, No.22 metro line, Hu-hang Railway and Hu-Hang High-speed Rail. These compose a crisscross transportation network. By the end of 2017, the resident population of Songjiang reached 1.75 million. Among them, 690,000 people were registered permanent residents. Songjiang is a modern new city that Shanghai suburb focuses on developing, and plays an important role in Yangtze River Delta. It has a long history, flourishing culture, convenient transportation and solid industrial foundations.
Songjiang has been awarded great honors such as International Garden City and one of China’s Ten Leisure Cities. As the only mountainous area in Shanghai, it is acknowledged for its profound history and culture as well as religious sites of long standing. Songjiang has become a medium scale cultural tourism garden city with an agreeable living environment and represents the comprehensive strength and level of Shanghai suburbs. The urban green area coverage percentage has reached 36.6%. The public greenbelt area per person is now 14.2m2. There are 362 public cultural facilities, such as cultural centers, museums and libraries, etc., covering an area of 260,000m². There are 29 public health institutions in Songjiang, which contain 4,164 beds. There have been 8 star-rated hotels in Songjiang, among which 3 are five-star hotel. Shop mall, such Wanda Plaza，Kaiyuan Plaza and Dream Plaza provides residents with a catering, leisure, shopping, entertainment and other one-stop service.
In 2017, ratio of growths in added value of three economic sectors in Songjiang was 0.6:53.1:46.3. Songjiang is one of the important advanced manufacturing industrial bases in Shanghai. In 2017, the industrial output value reached 393.8 billion RMB. The Songjiang industrial economy has obvious strengths which resulting in the development of the electronic information, modern equipment, urban industry and other traditional advantage industries. At the same time, Songjiang achieved breakthroughs in the fields of artificial intelligence, integrated circuit, new energy, biological medicine, intelligence security, new materials and other emerging key areas. In 2017, the output value of Strategic Emerging Industries in our region reached 96.07 billion RMB. In recent years, Songjiang is accelerating development of producer services, including headquarters economy, total integration and general contracting, inspection and testing certification. Meanwhile, Songjiang is also fostering “Four New” Economy to provide support for transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry.
Songjiang has a complete technological innovation system. So far, there is a total of 2 state-level enterprise technological center, 38 municipal enterprise technological centers, 130 district-level enterprise technological centers and a total of 602 approved high-tech enterprises in our region. Songjiang University Town is China’s first large-scale university campus made up of several diverse universities in Shanghai. Songjiang University Town covers an area of more than 4.8 km² with over 100,000 enrolled students. Seven universities have set up campuses here including Shanghai International Studies University, Donghua University, East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance, Shanghai Institute of Visual Art and Shanghai University of Engineering Science. By the end of 2017, the number of different individual schools in Songjiang was 301 (excluding Songjiang University Town) and the number of full-time students was around 149,000.
Songjiang has State-level Economic and Technological Development Zone and Songjiang Comprehensive Bonded Zone. In 2017, the industrial output value of Songjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone exceeded 243.85 billion RMB, accounting for 61.9% of the region's industrial output value and the total export products value reached 28.36 billion US dollars. By means of innovation, development of ideas and development mechanisms, Songjiang continues to explore the new model of successful development of industry parks. Songjiang formed Shanghai Lingang Group, Songjiang Science and Technology Park which is a version 3.0 industrial park. The new model of economic development and constructions were rapidly being replicated and popularized. Meanwhile, the influence of Creative Parks continues to expand, such as Creative Workshops, Shanghai Cangcheng Film & Television Cultural Industrial Park and Thames Town, which are allowing the cultural and creative industries to flourish.
